Why Butyl Rubber Is the Best Choice for Inner Tubes

When most people think about an inner tube, they probably don’t spend much time thinking about what the tube is actually made from. But the type of rubber used can make a significant difference in how well an inner tube holds air, handles heat, resists aging, and performs over time.

For most tire applications, butyl rubber is the material of choice, and there are some very good reasons why.

What Is Butyl Rubber?

Butyl rubber is a synthetic rubber primarily made from isobutylene with a small amount of isoprene. It was developed commercially in the 20th century and quickly became an important material in the tire industry.

Its standout characteristic is remarkably simple:

Butyl rubber doesn’t like letting air through.

All rubber is somewhat permeable, meaning tiny amounts of gas can gradually migrate through it. Butyl rubber has extremely low gas permeability compared with many other types of rubber.

That’s particularly important for an inner tube because its most fundamental job is to hold air.

1. Butyl Rubber Holds Air Better

This is the biggest advantage.

This matters because an inner tube needs to expand and contract thousands of times without becoming brittle.

Tires generate heat as they roll.

The sidewall continually flexes as the tire enters and leaves the contact patch with the ground. That flexing creates heat inside the tire, particularly when carrying heavy loads or operating for extended periods.

Butyl rubber has good resistance to heat and maintains useful properties across a broad range of temperatures.

An inner tube has a surprisingly difficult job.

It must be soft enough to expand and conform to the inside of the tire, yet strong enough to withstand inflation pressure, repeated flexing and movement without tearing.

Butyl Rubber vs. Natural Rubber Inner Tubes

Natural rubber still has some impressive properties. It is extremely elastic and can provide excellent resistance to tearing and flex fatigue.

But it also has an important disadvantage for an inner tube:

Natural rubber is significantly more permeable to air.

That means a natural-rubber tube can lose pressure more quickly through the rubber itself.

Butyl rubber sacrifices some of natural rubber’s extreme elasticity in exchange for dramatically better air retention and excellent resistance to heat and aging.

For most everyday tire inner-tube applications, that’s a very favorable trade.

What About Latex Inner Tubes?

Latex tubes are sometimes used in specialized bicycle applications because they are extremely flexible and lightweight. That flexibility can reduce rolling resistance in certain cycling applications.

The downside is air retention.

Latex tubes generally need to be inflated much more frequently because air passes through the material relatively quickly.

For a competitive cyclist who checks tire pressure before every ride, that might be perfectly acceptable.

For a tractor, lawn mower, trailer or piece of industrial equipment?

Not so much.

That’s where butyl rubber shines.

Not All Butyl Inner Tubes Are the Same

Simply saying an inner tube is made from butyl rubber doesn’t automatically make it a high-quality tube.

The formulation of the rubber compound, consistency of wall thickness, quality of the seams, valve construction and overall manufacturing quality all play important roles in how the finished tube performs.

A poorly manufactured butyl tube can still fail prematurely.

When selecting an inner tube, look for the correct size and valve configuration along with a reputable manufacturer and supplier.
